Andrew Hoffman LGBTQ Therapist Essex County NJ

LGBTQ Counseling

I provide a safe and compassionate and confidential environment for all LGBTQ clients and also individuals and am prepared to address the complexities facing the community.

Some of the challenges that I tend to focus on include:

  • Questioning sexuality / gender preferences
  • Relationships and Dating
  • Coming Out
  • Sexual Compulsion
  • Self-Esteem
  • Intimacy Issues
  • Dealing with Shame

For some individuals, sexual orientation and identity issues may be the cause for depression, anxiety and other emotional stressors.  For others, these issues may not be at the forefront of our therapy.  Either way, we will work jointly with you to focus on your specific individual needs and life problems.

LGBTQ Couples Therapy

Relationships are deeply rewarding and often complicated experiences.  I have worked with many couples over the past 10 years to help them understand the dynamics in their relationships and learn to communicate more effectively.

While there are universal dynamics that apply to all relationships, there are also unique dynamics to LGBTQ relationships and relationships where there is a cultural difference.

Couples therapy focuses largely on communication. It has been my experience that helping couples understand the psychological and emotional dynamics between them is also helpful.  I work to provide the often missing legitimization of their relationship, which allows them to connect in a more meaningful way.

Infidelity, sex, values conflict, navigating polyamory and open relationships, starting a family, are often the catalysts that bring couples into treatment.

Using Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and a culturally competent, LGBTQ affirmative framework to couples therapy, couples are able to address sensitive or confusing dynamics in their relationship in a safe and controlled environment.

The tools learned in couple’s therapy translate outside of the counseling session and into their everyday lives, allowing couples to negotiate the many dynamics in any relationship.
